3. Attività scientifica

La attività scientifica del Dr Petruzzelli comprende studi fondamentali ed applicativi ambientali dei fenomeni di trasferimento di materia in sistemi liquido-solido artificiali (scambiatori di ioni, carboni attivi, polimeri reattivi) e naturali (ossidi, argille, zeoliti), nonché materiali compositi quali suolo, sottosuolo e sedimenti. In questo ambito particolare attenzione è rivolta alle seguenti aree tematiche:

  1. Studi cinetico-diffusionali delle reazioni di scambio ionico in sistemi anionici eterovalenti
  2. Destino e trasporto di inquinanti in mezzi porosi naturali;
  3. Tecnologie per la rimozione e il recupero di specie ioniche persistenti (metalli) da reflui civili ed industriali.
  4. Trattamenti avanzati per il recupero di nutrienti e per il riutilizzo irriguo di acque reflue civili

Gli studi fondamentali di cui al punto a), svolti nel decennio 1980-1990, hanno riguardato gli aspetti cinetico-diffusionali delle reazioni di scambio ionico in sistemi eterovalenti su scambiatori anionici a diversa porosità, reticolazione, polarità, tipo di matrice del materiale polimerico costitutivo. Tali studi sono stati condotti in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Chimica della Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, USA e con l'Istituto di Chimica Fisica Organica della Accademia delle Scienze di Bielorussia, Minsk.

La seconda tematica, trattata fra gli anni 1985 e 1995, ha riguardato lo studio della interazione di inquinanti persistenti (metalli, composti organici) alla interfaccia liquido-solido in sistemi porosi naturali (suolo-sottosuolo), con specifico riferimento agli impatti ambientali derivanti dallo sversamento accidentale di prodotti chimici al suolo, la dispersione di percolato da discariche di rifiuti, la applicazione al suolo incontrollata di reflui parzialmente trattati, il rilascio da sedimenti di corpi idrici interni e marini costieri. Gli studi sono stati condotti in collaborazione con il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile ed Ambientale della Lehigh University, PA, USA, con il Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Laboratorio di Idrosistemi, della Università dell'Illinois a Urbana-Champaign nonché con l'IllinoisGeological Survey.

In questo ambito, nel 1992 il Dr Petruzzelli ha diretto ed organizzato una scuola estiva della Organizzazione Atlantica sul Destino e Trasporto Inquinanti nel Suolo e Sottosuolo (NATO Advanced Study Institute on “Migration and Fate of Pollutants in Soils and Subsoils”).

La attività di ricerca di cui al punto c), sviluppata negli anni 1995-2000, ha riguardato studi per la ottimizzazione di tecnologie innovative basate sulle operazioni di adsorbimento selettivo su polimeri reattivi di specie metalliche (Cr, Al, Fe) presenti in effluenti liquidi (acque di processo, bagni esausti) e solidi (fanghi) da attività industriali. Si è fatto specifico riferimento alla industria conciaria e alla industria di trattamento delle acque primarie (potabilizzazione).

Tali studi hanno consentito la ottimizzazione di due processi brevettati: a) SIRECHROM. (Scambio Ionico REcupero CHROMo), attualmente in fase di sviluppo su scala dimostrativa; b) del processo RECAL (RECupero ALluminio), anch'esso brevettato e volto al recupero di reattivi coagulanti (Al, Fe) dai fanghi di chiarificazione delle acque naturali.

La attività di cui al punto d), avviata agli inizi degli anni ottanta e tuttora in corso, ha riguardato studi di fattibilità e di ottimizzazione di processi avanzati per l'affinamento dei reflui civili, con specifico riferimento alle tecnologie innovative per la rimozione ed il recupero di specie nutrienti (ioni ammonio e fosfato) da effluenti secondari urbani.

Il processo RIM NUT (RIMozione NUTrienti), basato sulle operazioni unitarie di scambio ionico e di precipitazione chimica, consente la rimozione selettiva delle specie nutrienti presenti negli effluenti secondari urbani ed il loro recupero quantitativo sottoforma di un fertilizzante lento rilascio di pregio agronomico (MgNH4PO4.6H2O).

4. Research

Fundamentals and applications of liquid-solid mass transfer phenomena in synthetic (activated carbon, ion exchangers, reactive polymers), natural (oxides, clay, zeolites) and composite systems (soils, subsoils, sediments). In this context environmental applications were focussed on:

  1. Mass transfer and kinetics of ion exchange
  2. Transport and fate of pollutants in natural porous media
  3. Removal and recovery of persistent pollutants (metals, refractory organics) from civil and industrial effluents
  4. Advanced treatments for nutrients recovery and wastewater reuse from municipal effluents

Activity at point a), carried-out in the 1980/90 focussed on kinetic and diffusional studies of heterovalent ion exchange reaction on exchangers of different porosity, crosslinking degree, type of matrix, etc. Reference studies were completed in cooperation with the Department of Chemical Engineering of The Pennsylvania State University, PA,USA and with the Institute of Physico-Organic Chemistry of the Belarus Academy of Science.

Activity at point b), carried-out in the 1985/95, was focussed on the investigation of interactions of persistent pollutants at liquid-solid interface in natural porous media (soils, subsoils). Main applications made reference to accidental spills of chemicals to land, dispersion of leachate from solid-waste landfills, land application of partially treated effluents, pollutants release from sediments. The investigation was carried-out in cooperation with the Department of Civil Engineering of the Lehigh University, PA,USA. In this context, Dr Petruzzelli directed in 1992 a NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled: “Migration and Fate of Pollutants in Soils and Subsoils”.

Activity at point c), carried-out from 1995-2000 was focussed on the optimisation of innovative technologies for removal and recovery of metals (Cr, Al, Fe) from spent processing baths and industrial streams. In this ambit two processes were patented: a) the IERECHROM process (Ion Exchange REcovery of CHROMium) referred to chromium removal and recovery from tannery wastes; b) the ALREC process (ALuminium RECovery) referred to coagulants recovery from water clarifier and referred mainly to (waste)water industry. This latter process received the award as the best technological innovation in Europe for the year 1999 from the ALTRAN Foundation, Paris, France.

Activity at point d) refers to nutrients removal and recovery from municipal wastewater in the form of a valuable slow release fertiliser (struvite, MgNH4PO4). In this ambit, water-wastewater for multipurpose reuse is among other scientific interests and involvement.

Author of more than 100 publications in international journals, contributions to Conferences, Technical Reports and 2 Patents.
